European Electronic Health Record exchange Format (EHRxF)
The European Electronic Health Record exchange Format (EHRxF) will enable the secure and seamless sharing of personal health data among trusted partners. Patients and healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses, etc.) are the key trusted partners in the exchange of health data.
The EHRxF will empower patients to access their health data from any healthcare professional, whether in a hospital, private practice, or home care setting. More importantly, every patient will be able to share personal health data with whomever they wish, in a common format that is understood by everyone, even across borders. In addition, healthcare professionals across Europe will be able to access all relevant personal health data of their patients available anywhere (across their country or elsewhere in Europe), under the condition that they are actually entitled to access the electronic health record of that individual patient.
EHRxF in a nutshell
The basic principles of EHRxF are presented in a summarised form on this website. Through scenarios (case studies), you will learn how EHRxF can start working for different stakeholders. It also shows how EHRxF is created and which projects are contributing to its development and implementation.
To get a first glimpse about how EHRxF is shaping the future of healthcare, watch the video below. The video was made by the XpanDH project.

The Hub
The European Electronic Health Record exchange Format (EHRxF) is being discussed and developed in preparation of the publication and entry into force of the European Health Data Space regulation.
The European Electronic Health Record exchange Format is based on a number of (industry) standards for the exchange of personal electronic health data, as developed, published, and maintained by Standards Developing Organisations (SDOs) including ISO/TC 215, CEN/TC 251, HL7 International, HL7 Europe, IHE International, IHE Europe, and SNOMED International. Together, these SDOs are committed to support the implementation and extension of the European EHRxF through a series of projects and through the anticipated formation of the European EHRxF Standards and Policy Hub – a neutral and supportive environment to make sure that industry efforts, specific implementation programmes and projects, as well as other EHRxF related projects, are aligned with the EHDS regulation, the European EHRxF, and the underlying standards.
